Latch Hook Tutorial by Utterly Hooked Designs
Переглядів 1,1 млн10 років тому
This is a tutorial for how to be a latch hooker. In this video we take a look around my cosy corner where I do all my latch hooking, and I show you how to do the actual movement so that you can see how easy it is to get hooking! The set decorator, producer, director, Camera woman, editor and tea maker was my daughter Elizabeth Utley, and she thoroughly enjoyed bossing me around for a whole day....
U are a very buetiful women thank u for ur lessons
Thank you and you are very welcome.
🤩🤩Que trabalho perfeito ! 👍
Oh thank you so much. Regards Clare
Its too hard i had to restart the video 17 times and i still cant do it 😢
When I'm latch hook round canvas, do I turn the canvas, as I latch hook it?
Hi Cynthia. You work in rows just like you would with any shape of latch hook project. You always hook over the parallel bars of the canvas strands and do not change direction as the knots will then lie in a different direction and spoil the look of your work. Hope this helps. Regards Clare
I love your content, these tutorials have been so helpful for my girlfriend.
That's fantastic and thank you
Just about to try to do this! Cross fingers!
Hope it goes well for you. Regards Clare
Thank you so much. Nothing else has made sense!

You haven't shown what you do when you nearly reach the end and have no weight on a big rug. I've sussed that you turn it around and use the second latch hook method so the knots line up but I'm finding it mega tricky. Any advice please?
Hi Dawn. I put my brick weights to just one side of the rug and finish up to the edge and then swap the weights and do the other side. It works a treat and then you don't need to turn it around and do the knots differently. Hope this makes sense. Regards Clare x
@@UtterlyHookedDesigns thankyou for answering and so quickly Clare. I'll certainly give it a try. Your bricks look fantastic. I've a huge pile of the biggest books I possess!!
@@dawn777771 Books are great too! I just find my bricks really useful. My family laughed at me when I covered them but I have had them 10 years now and they are invaluable and cost nothing! Happy Hooking. Clare x
@@UtterlyHookedDesignsI've brought in some heavy stones from my drystone wall to add to my books!! This is working, Clare. Thankyou so much for the video. Placing the yarn well over to the right is making a huge difference. I thought I was having to give up with just a few inches to go!
@@dawn777771Great news! xx
Thank you for sharing this! I've been looking for a how-to about how to properly bind and finish off a hook rug; my mother used duct-tape when I was growing up and I didn't realize there was a different method until I was on Herrschners website and saw the finishing kits. I've tried three different searches to find finishing methods that included the binding tape and finally found your video. Thanks again! Also, your citrus rug pattern? So cute! My brother's kitchen is citrus themed, I know he would love to have this in it. I'll be checking your website in hopes you sell the pattern.
You are very welcome. Glad you found me! Regards Clare
How long are each piece of yarn?
Hi there. The industry standard is 6cm and this is what mine measure too, apart from those for my special 3D kits. Some kit companies cut their yarn at 5.5cm for example Trimits latch hook yarn. Hope this helps. Regards Clare
Thankyou so much! Ive always wondered! Do u happen to know how flokatis are made?
Hi Linda. You are welcome. Sorry I don't know how Flokatis are made but it looks like they are women with long wool strands which are then combed to give the fluffy effect. Regards Clare
Oh lovely that is nice and clear, thank you. I found the music covering over your voice a bit. A very good instructional video indeed. Thank you.
Hi there. Glad to help. Regards Clare

The Yorkshire tea recommendation 100% reassured me that you know exactly what you are talking about and that you have fantastic superior taste. Also thank you very much for making this tutorial. It is very clear and simple to understand. And has made me confident enough to attempt to make a moss themed hook rug ❤
Hi Nazifah. Thank you so much for your lovely message. Have fun and Happy Hooking! Clare x
Do you need to put a rug backing on for a no slip on latch hook rugs?
Hi There. I like to use a Spray on backing which then secures the yarn strands as well as providing a non slip back. Regards Clare
I love the result Thank you so much
Sahawntita Smith to see your love and love 💕
I'd like very much to thank you as I've had a lovely vintage set for an awfully long time and I didn't use them I bought them at an auction and they were a vintage lot , I have finally sold them because your video . Hi Alice. Thanks so much for your message. So glad I could help. Take care. Clare
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I bought a latch hook kit a little while ago, and the directions are not well written, so I couldn’t do it properly. This helped immensely! 💕
Hi Christina. So glad I could help. Happy Hooking!
Watch at 2:20 - best part.
Had to look at my video to see what happened at 2.20! Glad you liked my instructions!
Amazing video! I've been wanting to try this for a while, but wasn't sure where to begin. Early in my search for tutorials, I found your video, and you have made it look so easy and have laid out the steps so clearly, that I feel much more confident about starting my project. Thank you! 😊
Hi Buster. Thank you so much for your lovely message. Glad I could help. If you have any other questions, I am happy to answer them. Clare x
Thanks so much for your advice! I’m a novice and cut too close to my work and now the canvas is unravelling, do you have any tips 😅
Hi Maddie. I am afraid that once the edge of the canvas has been compromised the only alternative is to unpick 3 to 4 rows. You can then fold under and stitch a line down the canvas to reinforce it and then perhaps add back another row or two depending on how successful this is. The other way is to unpick several rows, overlap with another piece of canvas then hook through both layers. Then you get all your design. Hope this helps. Regards Clare
I am reading this five months after you posted this. I assume you finished your canvas by now. Wanted to say: I started my first latch hook wall hanging recently. Right away, I thought to myself, "What if the canvas unravels?" Since I was deep into bookbinding during the pandemic, "PVA glue" struck my mind. It is so strong. It dries quickly ... a tiny amount on a toothpick applied to the canvas .. here and there ... I think would stop the unraveling. Just wanted to say that. I'm sure you've already finished your project. Hope it turned out for you!
Just like to say I started a daunting Hook rug a few years back it is the back of the Dark Side of the Moon LP cover it huge ...Got the prism part with colors done but Holy Cow i never thought of how much black i had to do ...Just taken it back out and going to see it to the end and hang it with pride of a job worth doing .. But i really want to thank yo for this short vid because after having a away for a few years i had to refresh on how to do the Latch Hook now i can carry on thanks to you ...Hoping to have it done by March 1st for it will be Pink Floyds 50th anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon .. A very fitting way to celebrate for me ...
Hi there. This is great news! I bet it is going to look amazing. Working lots of black is really hard on the eyes, so I totally understand where you are coming from! A picture when it's finished would be wonderful. Wishing you happy hooking! Regards Clare
I did about 300 hooks last night I love how it starts to come to life and you see all the hard work pay off..I must finish it B4 March 1st the 50th anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon... I cut all my own yarn for it would cost me a small fortune to buy that much black Canvas Is 3ft wide by 2.5 feet tall its a big one
@@OneEyeBlinkn Keep going, you can do it!

Hi Alic. Glad you feel inspired to hook again! Regards Clare
this is such an AMAZING tutorial I will most defiantly use this when I am finished with my latch hook I do have one question are there other good alternative fabrics you can use other than furnishing fabric?
Hi there. Thank you so much for your lovely comments. You can use Denim or a heavy weight dress fabric, Corduroy, canvas. Allsorts! Clare x
i like how you work but i don have any issue with not weighing down my work. still this is a great view on the craft and how to
Thanks Dale. Regards Clare
Wish I'd seen this may restart mine
Hi Yvonne. You don't need to restart. Just fold the edges under and do the technique from where ever you are at the moment. Then at least some of your project has this edge and also you get to try it out. If you are bent on restarting, you only need to do the edges but make sure you have plenty of yarn for those that are spoilt when you pull them out. Good luck. Clare x
Hi Clare I did just that, didn't have to undo much but it's a great idea thanx. I'll show you once I've completed my project.
@@yvonnebass9717 Hi Yvonne. So glad you got sorted. Would love a piccie! Clare x
Thank you unlike some channels you don't go wittering on but stick to the point great, cheers
